How did the industrial revolution impact India socially?
Social life in India was affected greatly by the
Industrial Revolution. One thing that you need to remember when looking at this
topic is that India is still very much under the control of England.
With the major industrial revolution going on in England, India was just
seen as a resource. It supplied England with a market, raw materials, and
capital. India was pretty much just an asset.
This affected social life by causing nearly all of society to be focused
on work. The focus shifted to agriculture. The emphasis was put on producing
cash crops for England. This also decreased the amount of food produced for
domestic consumption greatly, causing famine to break out across India.
With all of the stress on work, family life suffered. Pretty much
everybody had to help and it became the center of family life as well as
economic life. People spent so much time working that pretty much any free time
was spent sleeping. It caused children to receive less education and it stunted
their growth. Obviously, the industrial revolution affected social life more
than you might think.
